Did you edit the image after taking the shot? I'm thinking of getting a Cannon 500D with a lens (forgot the focal length)... you think its any good?

A little bit contrast and sharpen in photoshop.
I do recommend you choose the newer 550D, has an image quality similar to 7D also similar movie quality.
As for the lens, I highly recommend the one I use, EF-S 17-55mm f2.8. Simply the best wide zoom there is for crop sensors.
